Shawwal is the tenth month of the Hijri calendar, beginning with the joyous celebration of Eid al-Fitr on its first day. The Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) encouraged fasting six days in Shawwal after Eid, stating that doing so along with Ramadan is equivalent to fasting the entire year. This month witnessed several significant events in early Islamic history, including the Battle of Uhud according to some narrations. It is a month of gratitude, celebration, and continued spiritual growth after Ramadan.

Eid al-Fitr
The Festival of Breaking the Fast. A day of joy, gratitude, and charity marking the end of Ramadan.
Passing of Hadrat Amr ibn al-As (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ
The great Companion and military commander Hadrat Amr ibn al-As (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ passed away. He was instrumental in the conquest of Egypt and served as its governor. He was known for his intelligence, diplomacy, and bravery.
Passing of Hadrat Imam Bukhari (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The greatest hadith scholar in Islamic history, Hadrat Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ, passed away on the night of Eid al-Fitr. He compiled Sahih al-Bukhari, universally accepted as the most authentic book after the Holy Quran.
Passing of Hadrat Imam Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The passing of Imam Fakhr al-Din Muhammad ibn Umar al-Razi, one of the greatest Islamic theologians and Quran commentators. His monumental Tafsir al-Kabir (Mafatih al-Ghayb) is one of the most detailed and intellectually rigorous commentaries ever written. He was a master of kalam (Islamic theology), philosophy, medicine, and mathematics. He championed Ash'ari theology and the Shafi'i school.
Passing of Uthman Harooni Chishti
The great Sufi master and spiritual guide Uthman Harooni Chishti passed away. He was the murshid (spiritual guide) of the renowned Khwaja Hadrat Moinuddin Chishti (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ of Ajmer.
Siege of Ta'if
Following the Battle of Hunayn and the conquest of Makkah, the Prophet Hadrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) ﷺ besieged the fortified city of Ta'if where the Thaqif tribe had taken refuge. After approximately 20 days, the Prophet ﷺ lifted the siege and made du'a for the guidance of the people of Ta'if, who later embraced Islam voluntarily.
Battle of Hunayn
A major battle after the conquest of Makkah. Initial setback turned into victory by divine help.
Passing of Abd al-Razzaq al-Jilani
Sayyid Abd al-Razzaq al-Jilani, the eldest son of the great Ghawth al-Azam Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani, passed away. He inherited his father's spiritual legacy and was a scholar and saint in his own right.
Battle of Uhud
The second major battle of Islam. Hamza, the uncle of the Prophet ﷺ, was martyred along with seventy companions.
Martyrdom of Hadrat Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ
The martyrdom of Sayyiduna Hadrat Hamza ibn Abdul Muttalib (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ, the beloved uncle of the Prophet Muhammad, at the Battle of Uhud. Known as 'Asadullah' (the Lion of Allah) and 'Sayyid al-Shuhada' (the Chief of Martyrs), he was killed by Wahshi ibn Harb. When the Prophet ﷺ found his mutilated body on the battlefield, he wept deeply. Hamza was one of the bravest and most devoted supporters of Islam.
Martyrdom of Hadrat Mus'ab ibn Umayr (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ
The martyrdom of Sayyiduna Hadrat Mus'ab ibn Umayr (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ at the Battle of Uhud while carrying the banner of Islam. Once the wealthiest young man of Makkah, he gave up everything for Islam. The Prophet sent him as the first ambassador/teacher to Madinah before the Hijrah, where he successfully taught Islam to the Ansar. He was so poor when he died that his burial shroud was too short — it was covered with idhkhir grass.
Passing of Hadrat Imam al-Qurtubi (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The passing of Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Qurtubi, author of the monumental Tafsir al-Qurtubi (Al-Jami li-Ahkam al-Quran), one of the most comprehensive Quran commentaries ever written, particularly strong on legal rulings derived from the Quran. Born in Cordoba (Spain), he later moved to Egypt. His tafsir is especially valued by scholars of the Maliki school.
Birth of Hadrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The great reviver of Islam in the Indian subcontinent, Hadrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ of Bareilly, was born on the 10th of Shawwal. He was a prolific scholar who authored over 1,000 works spanning more than 50 branches of Islamic knowledge and is revered as the Mujaddid of the 14th Hijri century.
Passing of Hadrat Sultan Nur al-Din Mahmud Zangi (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
Hadrat Sultan Nur al-Din Mahmud Zangi (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ passed away.
Birth of Hadrat Imam Bukhari (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The birth of Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari in Bukhara (present-day Uzbekistan). He would become the compiler of Sahih al-Bukhari, universally regarded by Sunni scholars as the most authentic book after the Holy Quran. He memorised over 600,000 hadiths and spent sixteen years compiling his Sahih, selecting 7,275 hadiths (with repetitions) based on the most rigorous criteria of authentication.
Siege of Banu Qaynuqa
After the victory at Badr, the Banu Qaynuqa tribe of Madinah violated the Charter of Madinah and threatened the Muslims. The Prophet Hadrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) ﷺ besieged them for fifteen days until they surrendered. They were expelled from Madinah for their treachery.
Passing of Hadrat Imam Abu Dawud (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The passing of Hadrat Imam Abu Dawud (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ Sulayman al-Sijistani, compiler of the Sunan Abu Dawud, one of the six canonical hadith collections. He collected approximately 500,000 hadiths and selected 4,800 for his Sunan, focusing particularly on hadiths relevant to Islamic jurisprudence. He settled in Basra where he taught until his death.
Passing of Hadrat Abdullah ibn Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ
Hadrat Abdullah ibn Abu Bakr (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ al-Siddiq passed away.
Passing of Hadrat Suhayb al-Rumi (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ
Companion Suhayb ibn Sinan al-Rumi passed away.
Passing of Hadrat Sayyidah Sawdah (Radiyallahu Anha) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا
Mother of the Believers Hadrat Sayyidah Sawdah (Radiyallahu Anha) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا passed away.
