Biography
Rabia al-Adawiyyah al-Basriyyah (c. 95-185 AH / 713-801 CE) was one of the most celebrated women saints and mystics in Islamic history. Born into poverty in Basra, she devoted her entire life to the worship and love of Allah. She is credited with introducing the concept of selfless, pure love of Allah (hubb) into the tradition of Islamic spirituality, famously declaring that she worshipped Allah neither out of fear of Hell nor desire for Paradise, but purely out of love for Him. Her piety and devotion earned her immense respect among scholars and mystics of her era.
