Born on a Friday when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was 30 years old. He is a paternal cousin of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) — son of Abu Talib (the Holy Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) uncle) — Inside the Holy Ka'bah

Appearance

height: Medium height — neither tall nor short

eyes: Large eyes

face: Outstandingly handsome — as lustrous as the full moon

shoulders: Broad shoulders — the portion between his two shoulders was wide

hands: Heavy palms, strong hands — his hands and shoulders were hard and immensely strong

neck: Slender neck

hair: Blessed hair from rear of his head, not from forehead

beard: Blessed beard was flowing — each hair was naturally dark

teeth: When he would smile, his blessed teeth would look like a string of white pearls

Bab-ul-IlmDoor of the City of Knowledge
  • Among the Asharah Mubashsharah (Ten Companions promised Paradise)
  • Embraced Islam at age 10 — among the earliest Muslims. He was raised under the direct care of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and always avoided idol worship from childhood
  • Door of the city of knowledge and wisdom — 'I am the city of knowledge, Abu Bakr is its foundation, Umar is its wall, Uthman is its roof and Ali is its door'
  • The scholar of the seen and unseen — Hadrat Abdullah Bin Mas'ood (radi Allahu anhu) stated: 'Ameer-ul-Mu'mineen Sayyiduna Ali-ul-Murtada is a scholarly person of great eminence who possesses both the knowledge of the seen and unseen'
  • Hadrat Umar Farooq-e-A'zam (radi Allahu anhu) stated: 'Ali-ul-Murtada holds three distinctions and even if one of them were awarded to me, it would be more beloved to me than red camels' — marriage to Hadrat Fatimah (radi Allahu anha), house adjacent to the Holy Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) Masjid, and the flag of Islam at Khaybar
  • Beholding Sayyiduna Ali is an Ibadah (worship)
  • He would recite the whole Quran in a moment — his comprehension of the Holy Quran, including exegesis of Surah Al-Fatihah, was unparalleled
  • The best jurist among the Companions — Hadrat Umar Farooq-e-A'zam (radi Allahu anhu) stated: 'Ali is the best jurist amongst all of us and Sayyiduna Ubay Bin Ka'b is a Qaari (reciter)'
  • Mentioned by name in the Glorious Quran — 'Allah is his helper, and Jibraeel, and the righteous believers' (Surah At-Tahrim, Verse 4). Hadrat Asmaa Bint-e-Umays (radi Allahu anha) confirmed that 'righteous believers' refers to Hadrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu)
You are in the same position with relation to me as Haroon was in relation to Musa, but there is no Prophet after me

the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

(Sahih Muslim, p. 1310, Hadith 2404)

Ali is to me as my head is to my body

the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

(Kanz-ul-'Ummal, vol. 6, p. 277, Hadith 32911)

I am the house of wisdom and Ali is its door

the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

(Jami Tirmizi, vol. 5, p. 402, Hadith 3744)

I am the city of knowledge, Abu Bakr is its foundation, Umar is its wall, Uthman is its roof and Ali is its door

the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

(Musnad-ul-Firdaus, vol. 1, p. 42, Hadith 105)

Love for me and hatred for Abu Bakr and Umar cannot gather in the heart of a true believer

Hadrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu)

(Al-Mu'jam-ul-Awsat lit-Tabarani, vol. 3, p. 79, Hadith 3920)

You are from me! You are my brother

the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

Maulana Ali is Wali of the believers

the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

Reward of loving the Ahl-e-Bayt

the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

First meal — when Hadrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) was born, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived and put his blessed saliva into the newborn's mouth, then placed his blessed tongue — Hadrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) suckled on the blessed tongue and slept, continuing until Allah willed

Unique Glory — Hadrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a series of profound questions. What is loyalty? 'The oneness of Allah and testifying it.' What is turmoil? 'Disbelief and polytheism.' What is truth? 'Islam, the Glorious Quran and sainthood.' What is necessary upon me? 'Obedience to Allah and His Rasool.' What is my salvation? 'Eat Halal and speak the truth.' What is pleasure? 'Jannah.' What is comfort? 'Seeing the blessed sight of Allah.'

Lay in the Holy Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) bed during the night of migration (Hijrah) — risked his life so the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) could safely migrate to Madinah

Demonstrated exceptional bravery in battles of Badr, Uhud, and Khandaq — and a great many renowned and brave warriors of the unbelievers were hurled into Hell due to the massive strikes of his unique sword named 'Zulfiqar'

The conqueror of Khaybar — given the flag of Islam by the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This was one of his three distinctions testified to by Hadrat Umar (radi Allahu anhu)

Married Hadrat Fatimah (radi Allahu anha), the beloved daughter of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) — this was one of his three distinctions. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married his daughter to him

His house was adjacent to the Masjid of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) — whatever was permissible for the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) inside the Masjid was his exclusivity. This was the third of his three distinctions

After the martyrdom of Hadrat Uthman (radi Allahu anhu), the Ansaar and Muhaajireen pledged Bay'ah to Hadrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) and elected him as Ameer-ul-Mu'mineen — he held the office of Khilaafat for 4 years, 8 months and 9 days

  • Past 30 years of Salah were repeated — his devotion to perfect worship
  • Deep love for the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) — when asked how much he loved the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he replied: 'I swear by Allah! The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is dearer to us than our wealth, offspring, parents and even cold water at the time of intense thirst'
  • Aversion to worldliness — when informed the public treasury was full of gold and silver, he distributed all the wealth among the people. After not even a single dinar or dirham was left, he ordered to spray water inside the treasury and offered two Rak'aat Salah there
  • Unasked generosity — 'I gave when anybody asked me and I still gave him without his asking (his demand)'
  • Would feel delighted by the worship of Allah in the darkness of the night — by Allah, he had been very fearful, far-sighted and grieved. He used to hold his Nafs (self) accountable
  • Would like to wear rough clothes and thick garments, and would eat coarse bread. Had such a majestic personality that all would feel reluctant to talk to him, yet he always came forward to meet visitors with a warm welcome
  • Would weep bitterly at night, holding his blessed beard and twisting like a wounded person, saying: 'O world! Have you turned your face away from me? O deceptive world! Go and mislead someone else. I have divorced you thrice in which there remains no opportunity of reconcilement'
  • A paralysed person was cured — a man afflicted with paralysis on one side of his body came dragging his legs. Hadrat Ali (radi Allahu anhu) made du'a and said 'stand up', and the person stood up normally and began to walk without any difficulty
  • Maulana Ali blew on an empty palm and it bore fruit
  • Severed hand was re-attached
  • A heavy flood subsided at his command
  • A water spring gushed out
  • Conversation with the deceased
