Rabi al-Awwal
رَبِيع ٱلْأَوَّل
Birth month of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam).
Rabi al-Awwal is the most celebrated month in the Islamic calendar, for it is the blessed month in which the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) was born on the 12th. Muslims around the world celebrate Milad un-Nabi with gatherings of praise, salawat, and remembrance. The birth of the Best of Creation brought light and mercy to the entire universe. This month is an occasion to deepen our love for the Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) and to study his blessed Seerah.
Events in Rabi al-Awwal(24 events)
Siege of Banu Nadir
The Banu Nadir tribe plotted to assassinate the Prophet Hadrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) ﷺ and was subsequently besieged. After a siege of several days, they agreed to leave Madinah, taking their movable property on camels. This event is referenced in Surah al-Hashr (59:2-5).
Passing of Hadrat Anas ibn Malik (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ
The passing of Sayyiduna Hadrat Anas ibn Malik (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ in Basra. He served the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for ten years from the age of ten and was one of the last Companions to pass away. He narrated over 2,200 hadiths — the third highest number among all Companions. The Prophet made special du'a for him: 'O Allah, increase his wealth and children and bless him.'
Standardisation of the Quran (Mushaf of Uthman)
During the caliphate of Hadrat Sayyiduna Uthman (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ, as Islam spread to diverse regions, variations in Quran recitation arose. Uthman commissioned Zayd ibn Thabit and a committee to produce standardised copies of the Quran based on the original compilation. These copies were sent to major Islamic centres (Makkah, Madinah, Kufa, Basra, Damascus) ensuring the Quran would be preserved in its original form for all time.
Rebuilding of the Ka'bah by Quraysh
Five years before the Prophet Hadrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) ﷺ received revelation, the Quraysh rebuilt the Ka'bah after it was damaged by flooding. A dispute arose over who would place the Black Stone (al-Hajar al-Aswad) back in its position. The young Hadrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) ﷺ was chosen as an arbiter and placed the stone on a cloth, asking representatives from each clan to lift it together — an early demonstration of his wisdom and justice.
Passing of Bahauddin Hadrat Shah Naqshband (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The passing of Khwaja Bahauddin Hadrat Shah Naqshband (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ Bukhari, the founder and namesake of the Naqshbandi Sufi order, one of the most widespread spiritual orders in the Muslim world. Born near Bukhara (present-day Uzbekistan), he emphasised silent dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and adherence to the Sunnah. His spiritual method of 'Khush dar dam' (awareness in every breath) became the hallmark of the Naqshbandi path.
Passing of Hadrat Sultan Muhammad al-Fatih (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The passing of Sultan Mehmed II (Muhammad al-Fatih), the conqueror of Constantinople and one of the greatest Muslim rulers in history. He fulfilled the Prophet ﷺic prophecy about the conquest of Constantinople. He was a patron of learning, spoke multiple languages, and transformed Istanbul into a centre of Islamic civilisation. He died during preparations for another military campaign.
Passing of Imam Hadrat Hasan ibn Ali (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ
The grandson of the Prophet, Imam Hadrat Hasan ibn Ali (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ, passed away.
Birth of Hadrat Jalaluddin Rumi (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The birth of Mawlana Jalaluddin Muhammad Rumi in Balkh (present-day Afghanistan). He would become one of the greatest Muslim poets and mystics in history, authoring the Masnavi (known as 'the Quran in Persian'), the Diwan-e-Shams, and Fihi Ma Fihi. His works are among the most widely read poetry in the world and contain profound spiritual insights rooted in the Quran and Sunnah.
Hadrat Fatimah az-Zahra (Radiyallahu Anha) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا Tends Wounds After Battle of Uhud
After the Battle of Uhud, Hadrat Hadrat Fatimah az-Zahra (Radiyallahu Anha) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا (radi Allahu anha) rushed to nurse the wounds of her beloved father, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She applied burnt palm mat ashes to stop the bleeding from his injuries, demonstrating her immense love and courage.
Passing of Hadrat Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ﷺ (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ
Hadrat Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ﷺ (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ, the beloved son of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, passed away in infancy in Madinah.
Marriage of the Prophet Hadrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) ﷺ and Khadijah
The marriage of the Prophet Hadrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) ﷺ to Sayyidah Hadrat Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (Radiyallahu Anha) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا, a wealthy and respected businesswoman of Makkah. She was the first to believe in his Prophethood and supported him through the most difficult years of his mission. Their marriage lasted 25 years until her passing. The Prophet said: 'She believed in me when people rejected me, she supported me with her wealth when people withheld, and Allah granted me children through her.'
Birth of Prophet Hadrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) ﷺ
The final Prophet Hadrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) ﷺ was born.
Passing of the Prophet Hadrat Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) ﷺ
The Prophet departed from this world in Madinah al-Munawwarah, in the house of Aisha.
Construction of Masjid an-Nabawi
Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah was built by the Prophet ﷺ and his companions upon arrival in Madinah.
Caliphate of Hadrat Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ Begins
Following the passing of the Prophet Muhammad, Sayyiduna Hadrat Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (Radiyallahu Anhu) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ was elected as the first Caliph (successor) of Islam at the Saqifah of Bani Sa'idah. His caliphate of just over two years was marked by the Wars of Apostasy (Ridda), the compilation of the Quran, and the beginning of the great Muslim conquests into Iraq and Syria.
Passing of Hadrat Bishr al-Hafi (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The saint Hadrat Bishr al-Hafi (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ passed away.
Birth of Hadrat Imam Malik ibn Anas (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The birth of Hadrat Imam Malik ibn Anas (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ in Madinah al-Munawwarah, who would become the founder of the Maliki school of jurisprudence and author of Al-Muwatta, one of the earliest compilations of hadith and Islamic law. Known as 'Imam Dar al-Hijrah' (Imam of the Abode of Migration), he spent his entire life in the city of the Prophet ﷺ.
Passing of Hadrat Imam Malik ibn Anas (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The Imam of Madinah, Hadrat Imam Malik ibn Anas (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ, passed away.
Passing of Hadrat Imam Zayn al-Abidin (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
Hadrat Imam Zayn al-Abidin (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ passed away.
Passing of Hadrat Mufti Waqar al-Din Qadiri (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
Grand Mufti of Pakistan Mufti Waqar al-Din passed away.
Birth of Hadrat Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The birth of Imam Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hanbal in Baghdad. He would become the founder of the Hanbali school of jurisprudence and the compiler of the Musnad Ahmad, one of the largest collections of hadith containing over 27,000 narrations. He is renowned for his steadfastness during the Mihna (Inquisition) when he refused to accept the Mu'tazili doctrine despite severe persecution.
Passing of Hadrat Shaykh Abd al-Haqq al-Dihlawi (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The great scholar Hadrat Shaykh Abd al-Haqq al-Dihlawi (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ passed away.
Passing of Muhyiddin Hadrat Ibn Arabi (Rahimahullah) رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ
The passing of Shaykh al-Akbar Muhyiddin Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Arabi in Damascus. Born in Murcia (Spain), he was one of the most influential mystics and scholars in Islamic history, authoring over 350 works including Al-Futuhat al-Makkiyyah and Fusus al-Hikam. He is buried at the foot of Mount Qasiyun in Damascus, where Sultan Selim I later built a mosque complex in his honour.
Passing of Hadrat Juwayriyah (Radiyallahu Anha) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا bint al-Harith
Mother of the Believers Hadrat Juwayriyah (Radiyallahu Anha) رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا passed away.
